Chateau Capion, Terrasses du Larzac

Chateau Capion, Terrasses du Larzac

Located in the south of France, to the north of Montpellier, Terrasses du Larzac is a relatively new appellation, whose name reflects the terraces descending 800 metres down from the famous Causse du Larzac plateau.

Due to the position of this 800m high limestone plateau it escapes the hot summer sun and drives cool air through the vineyards planted on its slopes.

The appellation is proving its star quality, producing full-bodied, age-worthy reds with freshness and character.

Chateau Capion, Le Chemin des Garennes 2016 Red

£199 per dozen or £109 per six [use coupon code CDG12 or CD6 at checkout]

A blend of 37% Syrah with 25% Grenache, 23 Cinsault and 15% Mourvedre. The unoaked Garennes Rouge is deep black-red in colour, with rich, vibrant fruit aromas of plum, blackcurrant and blackberry, combined with a clean, savoury intrigue. The palate is concentrated, deep and vivid, with great purity of fruit and Capion’s hallmark lively acidity; a fresh, pristine, juicy yet complex red from fastidiously sorted fruit, beautifully packaged and offering terrific value for money – Andrew Jefford: Drink to 2023

Chateau Capion 2017 Blanc

You thirst for more? This gives it to you! Very elegant and deep nose of spice, caramel, toasty oak, tea leaves and stone fruit. The palate is consummaately statuesque with whispers of buttery baked peach, citrus, vanilla, coconut, flowers and fine acidity. Very long, juicy and succulent. A joy to drink

Thorne and Daughters

Thorne & Daughters

I first came across Thorne & Daughters when New Wave South Africa hit the UK in 2014, it was John and Tasha’s second vintage and I think, the first to be shipped to the UK.
It was a fruitful encounter as Thorne & Daughters shard facilities with two other New-wavers Chris Alheit and Peter-Allan Finlayson of Crystallum.
Allocations were tiny as everyone scrambled to get their hands on a couple of cases; these were wines made by individuals not estates, the back story for the first time was about the winemaking, not family trees. These young winemakers had worked vintages the world over – John received his degree in viticulture from Plumpton College in the UK, with stints at Ridgeview and Bride Valley before South Africa became his focus.
Back in 2014, Thorne & Daughters was mainly focused on Cape Whites; blends from grapes sourced by knocking on cellar doors of friends and winemakers – John and Tasha did not want to be limited by geography, tied to a single estate or terroir, but driven by, in John’s words ‘a happy synergy of people, place, soil and vines.’
Vinification is simple no additions of any sort. Fermented with indigenous yeasts, in old French oak; the whites tend to stay on the lees in various barrels from 225 – 600 litres until blending. The reds are gently extracted, with the inclusion of stems and whole clusters to avoid the need for new oak.

Rocking Horse, 2019 Cape White – from £23.99
A blend of Semillon, Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc, Clairette and Roussanne
Tin Soldier, 2019 Swartland Semillon Gris – from £28.99
From a single parcel on the Paardeberg mountain in Swartland, which is believed to be the only 100% Semillon Gris vineyard in South Africa.
Cat’s Cradle
, 2019 Swartland Chenin – from £28.99
A single parcel of old bush-vine Chenin Blanc in Paardeberg
Paper Kite, 2019 Swartland Semillon Blanc – from £31
100% Semillon Blanc, sourced from old bush vines on the Paardeberg mountain,
Snakes & Ladders, 2019 Sauvignon Blanc from £31
Sauvignon Blanc from a vineyard planted in 1985 on the Skurfberg mountain
Wanderer’s Heart from £23.99
is Thorne & Daughters’ Cape red blend. Grenache Noir, Cinsault, Grenache Gris, Mourvèdre and Syrah combine to create a layered wine with a brilliant lightness of touch, displaying cool-fruit and bright red berry perfumes.

All of these wines reveal a stylish, effortless character that typifies the dynamic winemaking scene in the Cape today.

NEW RELEASE: 2011 Barca Velha

Only produced in exceptional years and then only released if perfect. Only the 20th release of Barca Velha since the first vintage in 1952.I don’t like to write up wines for investment – wine needs to be consumed to be truly appreciated, however the philosophy of buy one for the cellar and one to sell later is rarely as clear cut. The only problem is getting a big enough allocation in the first place.
If you are interested please read on – we are currently well under market on this making it the perfect cellar investment opportunity.

from Steven Spurrier’s profile of this rare Portuguese wine, and a favourite of retired football manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

Barca Velha was born in the Porto Ferreira stable and named in honour of its famous matriarch, Dona Antonia Adelaide Ferreira, who was affectionately nicknamed ‘Ferreirinha’ – or ‘little Ferreira’ in Portuguese, and responsible for laying down the best and most complete library stock the Port industry had ever seen.

Casa Ferreirinha was the first house in the Douro dedicated to making a table wine and today, with its 160 hectares of vines, provides the fruit that is meticulously blended to create Barca Velha, of which only 19 vintages have been released since the first vintage in 1952.

The winemakers

Only three winemakers have presided over the production of Barca Velha: Fernando Nicolau de Almeida, from 1952 to 1998; Jose-Maria Soares Franco, from 1998 to 2003; and Luis Sottomayor from 2003 to the present. Sottomayor joined the winemaking team in 1989, taking 14 years to study his trade under Almeida.

Four or five of the main Douro grapes find themselves in the blend, those from lower altitudes for structure, those from the higher altitudes retaining acidity, all working together for a long-lived structure.

The wine is only bottled when there are no questions about its quality and it is deemed ready. Following three or more years of tasting, the final decision to carry the Barca Velha name rests with the head winemaker. A vintage not quite up to the highest standard instead takes the name Reserva Especial.

Sottomayor’s commitment to, and knowledge of, the Douro is unsurpassed. He takes great pride in the opportunity he has been given to perpetuate the Barca Velha story, while recognising that he is building upon the creativity and daring of those who first set out to produce this great wine.
